Why are some address fields grayed out at checkout?

When checkout uses a saved address, its fields lock to protect your address book — here’s how to make a one-time change or update the saved address itself.

When you choose a saved address at checkout, its details lock so a quick edit can’t quietly change your address book. To change something, use Add A New Address for a one-time change, or Edit Saved Address to make it stick. The video above walks through both.

Each address you use is saved in your address book, so you don’t have to type it again. If checkout let you type over a saved address, a contact who’s only on site one day could end up on every draft order that uses it.

Change a saved address at checkout

1. At checkout, choose a saved address from your address book. Its details, like Contact Name and Mobile Number, are grayed out and can’t be typed over.

2. If the change is just for this order, like a different contact who’s on site that day, click Add A New Address.

3. To save typing, choose your saved address from the Populate from Saved Address menu at the top of the form. Then change only what’s different, like the contact’s name and mobile number.

4. Give this version its own Nickname, then click Save.

5. This order now uses the new address, and your original saved address stays as it was. Both are in your address book for next time.

6. If you want a change to stick for future orders, click Edit Saved Address instead. Make your change, then click Save.

7. The saved address is updated, and so is this order. The next time you choose it, you’ll see the new number.

How saved address changes work

  • Editing a saved address also updates every unsubmitted draft order and group order that uses it. If any will change, the form warns you before you save.
  • Adding a new address changes only the order you’re checking out. Your original saved address stays as it was, and both are in your address book.
  • Orders you’ve already placed keep their own copy of the address, so editing a saved address won’t change them. To change a placed order’s address, modify the order. There, the fields aren’t locked, and your changes affect only that order. See How do I modify or update my already-placed order?

What if…

…the whole address section is locked, buttons and all? If this is a group order set to submit automatically, its address is locked while auto-submit is on. Click Disable Auto Submit to make changes, then schedule it again. See Can I auto-submit my group order poll? The address is also locked if you didn’t create the order and aren’t an Admin of its organization.

…I only want to add delivery instructions? Instructions are part of the saved address too, so use the same two options. See How do I add delivery instructions?
