How do I add options, add-ons, and upcharges to menu items?

Set up reusable choices like sides, sauces, or add-ons on your menu items, with optional upcharges for each option.

On this page

A modifier group is a set of options customers choose from when they order a menu item, like a choice of side, a choice of sauce, or an optional add-on. You don’t need a separate menu item for every combination, and you can add the same group to as many items as you like. The video above walks through creating a group with two options and adding it to an item.

Each option’s price is added to the item’s price, for every item ordered. A $13 Turkey Club with fries, a $0 option, stays $13. With a $2.50 side salad, it’s $15.50.

Creating a modifier group

1. Open your menu in the menu editor. (See How do I update my menu? for how to get there.) Modifier groups are at the top, under Menu Item Modifier Groups. Click Add Modifier Group.

2. Enter a Modifier Group Name. Customers see this name on the item, unless you fill in Display Name (Optional). You can also add a Description (optional). Click Save.

3. Click Add New Option, enter the option’s name and its Price ($0 = free), and click Save. A price of $0 means no upcharge. Any higher price is added to the item’s price when a customer picks that option, for each one they order. Repeat for each option.

4. When your options are in, click Save again. The group shows at the top of the editor with its number of options.

5. Customers see the group only on the items you add it to. Click an item that should offer it. Under Modifiers, choose the group from the Add A Modifier Group list.

6. Set how many options a customer can pick:

  • Min Choosable is the fewest options a customer must pick. Set it to 0 to make the group optional. At 1 or more, customers have to choose before they can add the item to their order.
  • Max Choosable is the most options a customer can pick. It must be at least 1, and Min Choosable can’t go above it, so set Max Choosable first.

You can also change the Name and Description customers see for the group on this item only.

7. Click Save. The item now shows the group’s name in your editor. Add the group to every other item that offers the same choice.

Changing or removing a modifier group

  • Click a group at the top of the editor to change its name, description, or options. Changes to its options and prices reach every item the group is on, and Used On Menu Items lists those items. Click an option to change its name or price, or click Delete Menu Item to remove it.
  • If an item has more than one group, open the item and use Move Up and Move Down to set the order customers see them in, then click Save. Customers see the new order within about a minute. Group orders already sent, and items already in a customer’s cart, keep the old order.
  • You can’t delete a group while it’s on any menu item. To take it off an item, open the item and click Remove next to the group, then click Save. Once it’s off every item, click Delete on the group.

What if…

My menu is listed on the CaterCow marketplace? New options, and changes to the groups on an item, wait for our menus team’s review, like other menu edits. See How do I update my menu?

The menu is a linked copy of another kitchen’s menu? Changing a shared group from the copy changes it for that copy only. The original menu and its other copies keep the group as it was. See How do I share a menu across kitchen locations?

I can’t delete a group, even after removing it from every item? It may be part of a package. Email menus@catercow.com.
